HUMANITIES

CURRICULUM DESIGN

At Cranbury College our intent is to engage and inspire learners enabling them to become analytical and critical communicators. We want to empower our students to access and participate in society and aid transition back to mainstream settings, where appropriate.

Our curriculum intends to facilitate a connection between our students and the world that they live in, giving them the knowledge and opportunity to engage meaningfully in their own world. Students will be exposed to History, Geography and other social sciences, where appropriate, to support them in making reasoned judgements about society and both the physical and metaphorical state of their world.

IMPLEMENTATION

The Humanities subjects will be delivered through a blended learning experience so that all subjects are taught concurrently across KS3. This allows for students to keep their hand in all humanities subjects whilst a long-term placement is sought for them. The curriculum is designed to reflect the community that we serve, ensuring that students can build a connection with the humanities to foster a genuine interest in the subjects offered.

Key Stage 3

In KS3, students will look at topics that both engage students and reflect a part of their community, or society. They will have the opportunity to learn about their own country and history, so that they can forge meaningful connections with the story of how it came to be where it is now.

Key Stage 4

In KS4, students will be enrolled onto the WJEC Humanities course that will enable them to work towards the qualification. The curriculum is designed in such a way that allows for students to achieve AQA unit awards alongside their learning so that they can leave with qualifications, no matter when they move on to their next steps.

There is also an option for Cranbury to facilitate the completion of a GCSE qualification in either History or Geography, so it be appropriate for the student.

ASSESSMENT:

Key stage 3

In the humanities at KS3, we use assessment to inform of progress against national curriculum benchmarks.

KEY STAGE 4

GCSE Pathway: we have the capacity to facilitate the continuing of either history or geography at GCSE level in accordance with prior learning and study. This will be reviewed on a case by cases basis, and we will take both the student’s wishes and what we believe to be in their best interests in terms of academic progress into account when planning for their next steps.

WJEC Pathway: All students will have the opportunity to work towards and achieve an entry level qualification in humanities. The reasoning for this is to allow for them to access both History and Geography throughout their time at Cranbury College which will allow for them to transition to mainstream or their next steps more smoothly. This pathway is also aligned with AQA unit awards, meaning that students will still achieve awards even if they do not complete the full WJEC award.
